Portal STEM Education

At the moment there is a focus on the use of the Ministry’s equipment. To this end, cables are being created with which sensors can work with as many boards as possible, the STEM Extension with which we can program S1 & S2 with Mind+, Lego type building materials, Supporting materials with related lessons and books and suggestions. Seminars have been started to make use of the equipment available in schools.

The preparation of the Panhellenic Competition is in progress, for which the registration form for teams, information, the webinars for teachers’ preparation, etc. can be found here.

We can design our own knowledge and skills path.

Starting from what I am and where I want to go, we end up going through similar educational material, which is available in the [Repository] and in the [Repository structure] that is organised to facilitate this journey.

Good navigation.

About Course

The Optics activities series are conducted with the optical bench & optics set for magnetic board (and an additional set of slits) giving students the opportunity to actively engage in a variety of optics experiments on the plane or in space, using a set of optical instruments, such as mirrors, lenses and prisms.

Indicatevely, the study of reflection, refraction, analysis and composition of light are available, as well as some methods for calculating object’s images, and the study of optical aberrations.

Course Content

1. Light Reflection – Reflection Law
1st Activities set on Geometrical Optics on magnetic board. In this section, the reflection of light is studied against flat or spherical mirrors. Also, the reflection law is verified.

  • Experiment 1. Flat Mirror Reflection – Reflection Law
  • Experiment 2. Reflection in a cylindrical mirror

2. Light Refraction – Refraction Law
2nd Activities set on Geometrical Optics on magnetic board. In this section, the refraction of light is studied, while the Snell's law of refraction is verified as well.

3. Spherical Lenses
3rd Activities set on Geometrical Optics on magnetic board. In this section, the reflection of light through convergent and divergent lenses is studied, along with lenses combinations.

4. Prisms
4th Activities set on Geometrical Optics on magnetic board. In this section, the reflection of light is studied, using flat, triangle and trapezoid prisms or combinations of them.

5. Analyzing and Composing White Light
5th Activities set on Geometrical Optics on magnetic board. In this section, the analysis and comsposition of white light is studied. Also, the second "critical" experiment of Newton about single-frequency spectral components of light. Also, the spectral components absorption is observed, using color filters.

6. Optical Aberrations
The 6th and last activities set on Geometrical Optics on magnetic board. In this sevtion, three basic optical aberrations of a converging lens: Spherical aberrations, Chromatic aberrations, and Comatic aberrations (coma).

7. Thin Lens Experiments
These experiments are devoted to familiarization with the fundamentals of the imaging function of thin lenses as predicted by Geometrical Optics. Methods for measuring the focal length of thin lenses are applied, among other things, where the determination of the requested sizes is done both graphically and computationally, bringing us into contact with fundamental methodologies for the Natural Sciences.
