At the moment there is a focus on the use of the Ministry’s equipment. To this end, cables are being created with which sensors can work with as many boards as possible, the STEM Extension with which we can program S1 & S2 with Mind+, Lego type building materials, Supporting materials with related lessons and books and suggestions. Seminars have been started to make use of the equipment available in schools.

The preparation of the Panhellenic Competition is in progress, for which the registration form for teams, information, the webinars for teachers’ preparation, etc. can be found here.

STEM Program: Introduction to Music Fundamentals Through Creative Instrument Making

Program Description

This STEM program introduces children to fundamental music concepts by engaging them in hands-on activities where they create models of musical instruments using cardboard and simple electronic components. Each activity begins with an introduction to a key music theory concept, followed by the construction of a musical instrument from cardboard using step-by-step instructions.

Once the instrument is built, children integrate conductive touch points and connect them to a Microbit microcontroller linked to a computer. Using the Scratch-based Mindplus programming environment, they create interactive programs that produce corresponding sounds when they touch the conductive points on their instruments. The program also features animated visual elements related to musical themes, enhancing the learning experience.

Through this engaging process, children explore music theory, coding, animation, and hands-on construction, making learning both fun and interactive. The instruments built during the program include:

  • Drums
  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Glockenspiel
  • Trombone
  • Launchpad
  • Tambourine

Course Content

Activities
Like all other art forms and all branches of science, music has its own conditions and requirements in order to be performed by a musical ensemble. The 'grammar' of music includes theoretical and practical knowledge such as music theory, harmony, rhythm and melody. In this project, we will approach some of these basic concepts using musical instruments that you will build and program using the micro:bit microcontroller and mind+ software.
